Adoption

Questions about adopting a hand-raised parrot from Fine Feathered Aviary.

Adopting a parrot from us is a simple, guided process. Start by browsing our Available Birds section to see current hand-raised parrots. Once you find a bird you're interested in, fill out our Adoption Inquiry Form or contact us directly. Our team will schedule a consultation to discuss your experience level, living situation, and the bird's needs to ensure a perfect match.

Yes! Every parrot at Fine Feathered Aviary is hand-raised from hatch and socialized daily. Our certified avian specialists handle each bird multiple times per day, exposing them to various environments, sounds, and human interactions. This ensures they are gentle, trusting, and ready to bond with their new families.

Our available species rotate based on breeding seasons and demand. We typically carry a wide range including African Greys, Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazons, Conures, Eclectus, Cockatiels, Budgies, Lovebirds, and more. Visit our Available Birds page for real-time updates, or contact us to be notified when specific species become available.

Absolutely. Every parrot comes with a 30-day health guarantee backed by our avian veterinarian. If any health issues arise within this period, we cover veterinary costs or offer a replacement. We also provide a lifetime support guarantee — our team is always available to answer questions about your bird's care, behavior, and health.

Bird Care

Essential care tips and guidance for new and experienced parrot owners.

A balanced diet is crucial for your parrot's health. We recommend a mix of high-quality pellets (60-70%), fresh vegetables and fruits (20-30%), and limited seeds and nuts (10%). Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. We stock veterinarian-formulated pellets and fresh food blends tailored to each species. Our team provides a personalized diet plan with every adoption.

Parrots are highly social creatures. Most species need 2-4 hours of direct interaction daily, plus time outside their cage in a safe, supervised area. Smaller birds like budgies and lovebirds need at least 1-2 hours. Larger parrots like macaws and cockatoos thrive with 4+ hours. If you're away often, consider getting a companion bird or enrichment toys to prevent loneliness.

Training requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Start with basic "step-up" commands using treats as rewards. For talking, repeat words clearly and associate them with actions or objects. African Greys, Amazons, and Cockatoos are natural talkers. We offer free training guides with every adoption and can recommend certified avian behaviorists for advanced training.

Cages & Housing

Find the perfect home for your feathered companion.

Cage size depends on species. As a rule: the cage should be at least twice the wingspan of your bird in width. Minimum guidelines:

  • Budgies/Lovebirds: 18" x 18" x 24"
  • Cockatiels/Conures: 24" x 24" x 30"
  • African Greys/Amazons: 36" x 24" x 48"
  • Macaws/Cockatoos: 48" x 36" x 60"+

We sell species-appropriate cages with proper bar spacing to ensure safety and comfort.

Every cage needs perches of varying diameters (natural wood is best), food and water dishes, foraging toys, a cuttlebone or mineral block, and a shower perch. Rotate toys weekly to prevent boredom. We stock a curated selection of vet-approved accessories, and our team helps you choose based on your bird's species and personality.

Place the cage in a social, well-lit area where your family spends time — parrots are flock animals and need to feel included. Avoid direct sunlight, drafts, kitchens (fumes are toxic), and isolated rooms. The cage should be against a wall for security, with enough space around it for the bird to feel safe. Never place cages near windows where predators might be visible.

Food & Supplements

Nutrition, treats, and dietary supplements for optimal parrot health.

We recommend calcium supplements (especially for laying hens), probiotics for digestive health, omega fatty acids for feather quality, and vitamin D3 for birds with limited UV exposure. All our supplements are veterinarian-formulated and species-specific. We provide a supplement schedule with every adoption based on your bird's age, species, and health needs.

Yes! Treats are great for training and bonding. Healthy options include unsalted nuts, dried fruits, millet sprays, and our homemade birdie bread. Avoid sugary, salty, or fatty human foods. We stock a wide range of natural, preservative-free treats that parrots love. Remember: treats should make up no more than 10% of daily caloric intake.

Diet transitions should be gradual over 2-4 weeks. Start by mixing 75% old food with 25% new food. Every few days, increase the new food ratio by 10-15%. Monitor your bird's weight and droppings. Some birds resist change — try offering new foods in the morning when they're hungriest. Our team provides step-by-step transition guides and is available for support throughout the process.

Health & Wellness

Keeping your parrot healthy, happy, and thriving for decades.

We recommend annual wellness exams for healthy adult birds, and bi-annual checkups for chicks, seniors, or birds with chronic conditions. Find an avian-certified veterinarian in your area — not all vets treat birds. We can recommend trusted avian vets near you and provide a health record for every bird adopted from us.

Parrots hide illness well, so watch for subtle changes:

  • Fluffed feathers for extended periods
  • Changes in droppings (color, consistency, frequency)
  • Loss of appetite or weight
  • Lethargy or decreased vocalization
  • Discharge from eyes or nostrils
  • Difficulty breathing or tail bobbing

If you notice any of these, contact an avian vet immediately. Early detection saves lives.

Yes! Regular grooming includes nail trimming, beak maintenance, and occasional wing clipping (optional). Provide rough perches and mineral blocks to naturally wear down nails and beaks. For wing clipping, we recommend having it done by a professional. We offer grooming services at our aviary and can teach you safe at-home techniques.
